Q. Tell us about yourself, How did you get into photography?
Answer. I got started when I was an architecture student. We were required to photograph our designs and I fell in love with the darkroom; seeing a blank paper come to life with an image was Magic! Of course, in those days, it was hours between taking a photo and seeing the image.

Q. Operating in both commercial and fine art realms, how do you navigate the differing demands of these fields?
Answer. With commercial work I’m generally working with someone else’s concept & typically the model is clothed. So really it’s more of having the mindset to establish good communication up front, making sure that the client & understand each other’s vision & how to create it in a way that pleases us both.

Q. How do you think social media is impacting the photography industry?
Answer. It’s a double-edged sword. Social media has definitely impacted the quality & quantity of assignments for professional photographers in a negative way. It’s definitely a major boost for exposure for the artist. But it’s also a bit of a ‘dumping ground’ for mediocre images when you put content over quality. The great tragedy, though, is there are so many stunning images that go unappreciated because the typical viewing screen is only 3-6 inches. Most of my images are created in 16” x 20” format so a lot of detail goes unnoticed.

Q. Any photography tip or trick that you stick by that always works?
Answer. Always be open to “What if?” It can be real easy to miss out on a great image when you stay rigid to the original concept

Q. Your ‘Dreamscapes’ series is particularly evocative. Can you share the creative process behind developing this series?
Answer. It’s difficult to define. But with every image I create I begin with meditation to open my creative energies to possibilities. Sometimes I’m particularly drawn to a concept & that will fuel the first 3-4 images. When collaborating with a skilled model, she often brings a varied perspective which will inspire a tangent and a somewhat evolution begins.

Q. What is your way of relaxing after a long day of photoshoots?
Answer. A cold beer and reflection on the day. Regardless of the effort that goes into a photoshoot I’m always enriched by the creative energies.

Q. As AI tools become more prevalent in creative fields, do you see them as a threat or a tool for photographers?
Answer. Initially AI is more of a threat. It’s marketed as creativity with the push of a button but it’s still in its infancy so you’re still left with a limited number of options that AI can offer. Like any tool thought, it’s all in how it’s used. Until AI can ‘see’ the artists’ thoughts it will be limited to being simply a tool that’s available just like any other piece of equipment

Q. What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?
Answer. I’m learning to sew. I really like distinctive wardrobe. So, I decided to make my own. Before I started doing my ‘Dreamscape’ work, I was intimidated by beautiful women.
Q. What do you love to do when you’re not behind the camera?
Answer. Well I love editing. But when I’m not doing my photography work I love to work with my hands. I’ve sculped two metal fire places & one out of adobe.

Q. Is there a particular image or series you feel most emotionally connected to and why?
Answer. There is an emotional connection with most images I create. I think for any artist you need to connect with your work on an emotional level for it to be fulfilling.

Q. What advice would you give to photographers who want to start a career in photography?
Answer. Do it because you love creating/capturing beautiful images, first. The money will follow. Love what you do! If you are passionate about your work, others will connect with that.

Q. How do you think has your personal style evolved over the years?
Answer. It’s always evolving! I’m always experimenting with light, shadow, composition & form. And of course, as skills evolve so does my style of expression

Q. What would you like people to remember or feel when they look at your body of work?
Answer. I would hope most people will see beauty. Beauty in the model as well as the composition of the piece. But I hope my work engages people to look beyond the surface of their feelings to a deeper level of expression.

Q. Are there any new themes or projects you’re currently exploring or working on that you’d like to share?
Answer. I’m continuing working on exploring the theme of Transition. I’ve always been intrigued by the journey of a butterfly; encasing itself as a larvae into a cocoon of its own making and the struggle to ultimately emerge as a beautiful butterfly.
